Funding for Graduate Student Affiliates

CHIP Graduate Research Grants

These awards are intended to assist graduate student affiliates engaged in research on social processes that influence population dynamics and/or health inequalities. Typical awards might consist of seed money for an exploratory/pilot study.  Applicants should explain how the grant will improve their chances of obtaining additional sources of funding (internal and/or extramural).  Maximum amount:  $1,000.

Eligibility

  • Any active Graduate Student Affiliate of CHIP is eligible to apply for these grants.
  • Applications must involve at least one additional CHIP faculty or graduate student affiliate to reflect the collaborative mission of CHIP.

Expectations

  • Graduate students receiving CHIP research grants must submit a detailed accounting of all funds spent after completion of the project and a brief report.
  • Any publications resulting from a grant award will acknowledge the support of CHIP: “The study was supported by funding from the Carolina Consortium on Health, Inequalities, and Populations.”

How To Apply

Completed applications should be submitted as one complete PDF file and sent to the following email address: emily.mann@sc.edu by the deadline stated. Please include your last name in the PDF file’s title and specify in the email subject heading the type of award. For example: “Mann Graduate Research Grant”

Application packets should include:

  • A cover letter that indicates the name of the award sought, a brief summary of the project, identifies all participants, and lists the amount of funding sought.
  • A narrative proposal, not to exceed 800 words.
  • A detailed budget for the project. A template is available upon request.
  • Current CV for all study personnel.

CHIP Graduate Student Conference Grants

These awards assist graduate student affiliates with travel funds to present a paper or poster at a conference.  Maximum amount: $500.

Eligibility

  • Any active Graduate Student Affiliate of CHIP is eligible to apply for these grants.
  • The research being presented much reflect CHIP’s focus on social processes that influence population dynamics and/or health inequalities.
  • Only one application per year is permitted.

Expectations

  • Graduate students receiving CHIP conference awards are expected to give a brief presentation on the research during a CHIP meeting.

How To Apply

Completed applications should be submitted as one complete PDF file and sent to the following email address: emily.mann@sc.edu at least 30 days prior to the planned conference travel. Please include your last name in the PDF file’s title and specify in the email subject heading the type of award. For example: “Mann Graduate Conference Grant.”

Application packets should include:

  • An application that indicates the name, date, and location of the conference, a brief summary of the conference presentation as it relates to CHIP’s focus, identifies all collaborators, and lists the amount of funding sought.
  • A detailed budget for the amount of funds sought and a list of additional sources of funding, if applicable.
  • Current CV
